Mouth yeast infection (thrush) is an unpleasant oral infection caused by the candida albicans fungus. It affects many people but some of the most at risk of yeast infection in the mouth are; young babies, diabetes sufferers, denture wearers, people with HIV/AIDS, folks on antibiotics, and steroid inhaler users.

Mouth yeast infection symptoms are; creamy / white raised spots over tongue and mucous membranes, sometimes thick white / creamy coating over tongue, cracks in tongue under this coating, slight burning sensation in mouth and throat, difficulty swallowing, and, bad breath.

Mouth yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of the ‘candida albicans’ fungus that particularly likes the warm, dark and moist areas of the body such as the mouth, vagina, gastro-intestinal tract, anus, etc. The fungus is normally prevented from doing this by your body’s ‘good’ bacteria. When the good bacteria is compromised, however, the yeast fungus can overgrow and spread, causing an infection.

The types of things that can affect the good bacteria in this way are; antibiotics, steroids, lowered immune system, body pH, and more. And high sugar levels help to feed the yeast-like fungus.

Mouth yeast infection mainstream treatment uses either prescription, or, over-the-counter creams, gels, pessaries, etc. Or, in the case of yeast infection in the mouth, liquid suspensions or pastilles. These work okay for the most part, but many folks still struggle to eliminate their infection completely, or, suffer recurring infections.

Part of the problem is that these are drug-based medications, so that the fungus can become drug-resistant. And they attack the local symptoms but not the root cause(s). So many frustrated sufferers are now looking towards natural remedies.

Oral thrush can be eliminated by using natural home remedies that don’t have the downsides of drug-based treatments. And of course they are much cheaper than drugs. This approach uses things like apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, honey, and yogurt, etc. Of course there are many more to choose from in order to find which works best for you.

But, crucially, a natural approach for mouth yeast infection could also involve dietary and even lifestyle changes or ‘adjustments’ to address the underlying issues that can trigger the infections. It’s very difficult to get a complete cure if all you do is get rid of the symptoms without doing something about the underlying conditions as well.

A mouth yeast infection is not a common type of infection. This infection is commonly referred to as ‘Thrush’ and it is something that usually happens to babies more than anyone. Mouth yeast infections have only been well known about within the past 10-15 years because they were previously so uncommon and unheard of. Not only is this type of infection painful, but it can also be very embarrassing for those who suffer from it. What happens is that a creamy, curd-like white substance occurs in patches in the mouth, the tongue, the lips, and even on the inside of the cheeks. These spots can be as big as a 50 cent piece or as small as a fingernail. Lesions can also run down the throat, although they will not be seen like others. They will still be felt, however, and are not pleasant by any means.

Many physicians never knew the cause of a mouth related yeast infection. Therefore, they would simply scrape off the fungus and leave patients with raw, bleeding skin irritations that hurt very badly. Additionally, when this condition is left untreated, it can travel through the body and create problems with other body parts, which is why it is considered to be much more dangerous than any other type of yeast infection. The main cause of a mouth infection related to yeast, as doctors have now figured out, is extensive use of steroids and/or antibiotics. Thrush was popular among patients with weakened immune systems simply because they could not fight it off as well.

According to research, Thrush comes in four different stages and each one carries with it its own difficulties. The most common stage that people are aware of is the Thrush or moniliasis stage, which is the onset of the infection. However, from here it goes to the Erythematous stage, which is when the coating comes off and there is red tissue left behind. Following that, the mouth sores will not go away and will appear to be stained from food or tobacco products, which is known as the Chronic Hyperplastic stage. Finally, the person’s mouth corners will develop red cracks and enter the final stage known as Angular Cheilitis.

When a mouth infection that is caused by yeast is not treated effectively, it can be dangerous to the wellbeing of the person. There are many pharmacies that offer an over the counter pill that will end these infections, but sometimes they are not effective. Generally, the symptoms are just covered up until they go away, rather than actually destroying the source of the infection. Understanding yeast infections of the mouth and how they work is your first step in getting the help that you need. You should always discuss this issue with a doctor to ensure that you get the right treatment. Thrush is a very serious condition and one that you cannot afford to overlook. Keep these things in mind and you can make the healing process even easier on yourself.
